The Rolex Datejust is Transformed

Produced in 1954, this Datejust was one of the first Rolexes to be designed with a cyclops magnifying lens over the date window, making it easier to read. An idea which, according to Rolex lore, came about when the wife of Rolex founder and CEO Hans Wilsdorf complained about how difficult it was to read the date on her Datejust.

The Datejust Ref. 6305

This model was one of the first Datejusts to have a properly working date change mechanism, an improvement on the earlier models, which would change dates hours before the day was over. it was also one of the earliest Rolexes to have a fluted bezel. In Italy, the Datejust ref. 6305 was nicknamed “Ovettone”, which means "Big Egg" in Italian, because of its round protruding case back, also known as "Bubble Back" among collectors.

The First U.S. President to Wear a Rolex

During the second world war, Hans Wilsdorf, founder and CEO of Rolex at the time, gifted 5-star general Dwight D Eisenhower with an 18K solid yellow gold Datejust reference 6305 for his leadership in the war. The Datejust he received was Rolex's 150,000th certified chronometer, the 100,000th was given to Winston Churchill. In 1953 Eisenhower became president and was said to have worn his Datejust reference 6305 throughout his two terms in office.
